The Florida Credit Union (Gainesville, FL) just posted this on Facebook:

"We want to thank the many new members who have joined FCU and experienced the credit union difference, making the last 3 months the highest for new membership in FCU’s 57 year history. And also a big “Thank You” to our existing members for helping to get the word out about credit unions."

I hope they were all former Back of America customers!!

Keeping the money away from all those Florida shysters. All those retirees in Florida must have moved their retirement funds to credit unions so Republicans and their butt buddy investors can't touch them. With the Republicans, banks, brokerage houses, the FED and Corporate America acting like the backstabbers they are I wouldn't invest or finance sh1t except through the credit unions. Credit unions are the most stable finance sources these days.

And, if it's happening like this in Gainesville, FL let's hope is happening all over the country too.

It's really surprising that more people weren't in a credit union already.

My mother is a teacher and I got mine when I was five. Other bank accounts can lapse but not my CU!

I will have it until I no longer work in M-D county.

I have been with Navy Federal Credit Union since 1990. Wouldn't trade it for the world.

I keep reading where people are joining credit unions and certainly each person can do as they choose. While people seem to have a certain perception of some banks being too big to fail, smaller banks being safer and credit unions being safest of all, few fail to realize the turmoil that has taken place in the latter two categories. All three work on the same basic principle, with the credit unions having a huge advantage of not having to pay taxes on any profits. Of course, the credit unions now have a monkey on their back with those federally backed loan guarantees, that they will be required to pay off over the next 10 years.

I'm not trying to discourage changing to a credit union or another bank, but trying to suggest the decision be given as much thought as buying a home, car, which college, etc. Afterall, they contain financial considerations.

Bad Fish

I currently do business with several credit unions as well as banks. Prior to the financial crisis i saw some pretty shady loan programs from the credit unions. They really aren't different from the banks. They increase members, they increase loan portfolios for the same reasons as banks. To make money and justify larger salaries.

Actually my credit union has been very good and gotten excellent rating as well. It's only a county wide one but I have no problem getting a personal loan for a small amount, unlike the banks who want me to take out a large loan. I get an excellent credit rate. They helped to repair my credit. Never denied me a loan for educational purposes.

Maybe there are some large bad ones but in my case, mine is good.

We are a part of a credit union and it's a much better experience than when we were with Wells Fargo. No shady stunts and I don't feel like "just a number".

Just hope that these new customers are all from Bank of America.

This is a good thing...it shows that the market works. Don't like big banks...join a credit union. Don't like to deal with any financial institution...carry cash. It's all about choices. The market will eventually figure things out. Too much government interference inhibits that ability. Competition is the key.

Regards,

Mike
